Description

LaTeX is a highly customizable program for typesetting scientific documents. It is particularly useful to linguists as a means for easily generating interlinear glosses, writing in the International Phonetic Alphabet, depicting logical expressions, formatting complex charts and diagrams, and managing references. More generally, it allows us to both effectively and beautifully convey our ideas.

This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the basics of LaTeX as well as some of the advanced features that are relevant to linguists. This includes the following:

  • usage/installation, package management, document customization, bibliography management
  • development of manuscripts/theses, handouts, slideshows, posters
  • introductions to formulae and diagrams relevant to applied, experimental, and theoretical linguistics.

As a hands-on workshop, participants will develop their own materials and resources for personal use. While previous experience with LaTeX is not required, a laptop computer is highly encouraged.
